About Us
The Environmental Engineering Society was established in 1994, from its predecessor the National Committee on Environmental Engineering. The Society was inaugurated by the first meeting of the National Board on 28 November 1996. In 2005 the Society was renamed SSEE, The Society for Sustainabilty and Environmental Engineering in order to recognise the importance of sustainability in the engineering profession.
The Society relies substantially on the active support and involvement of our members in order to achieve our goals and objectives and to be able to provide technical and professional development support for our members.
The Society is an inclusive industry association keen to welcome members including those professionals from other fields of engineering and the natural and social sciences working towards environmental sustainability. The Society is affiliated with the Environmental College and gains its corporate entity as a constitutional part of Engineers Australia through the Board of Engineering Practice.
The objectives of the Society are to:
- promote professional ethics through adherence to the Environmental Principles for Engineers.
- promote national excellence in the practice of environmental engineering promote participation in, and contribution to, activities of the Society.
- provide, at the national level, the focus and co-ordination mechanism for professional society matters, policy formation, and communications.
- facilitate linkages at the international level, enabling members to benefit from international exchanges in matters concerning environmental engineering.
- provide a focus and co-ordinating mechanism for professional society functions concerning research, education, and information dissemination in environmental engineering.
- facilitate active participation from other professions communicate knowledge about environmental engineering with, and to promote collaboration between, members, organisations and other societies.
- provide expert advice to the Institution, Government, industry and the community set guidelines and standards for incorporation of sustainability principles into engineering education and professional practice.
- Influence community, corporate and regulatory attitudes and practices in relation to sustainablility.

The Society is managed by a National Board of members elected from local Chapter membership in each Division.
Currently local Chapters have been formed in Tasmania, Victoria, Sydney, Newcastle Western Australia, Queensland (with NQ Sub-Chapter) and the ACT.
Environmental Engineers are also eligible for Chartered Professional Engineer status through Engineers Australia.
The Society administers an Environmental Engineering category for NPER. Registration on NPER is encouraged for all corporate members. All environmental engineers can now make applications for registration.
The Society is administered by an executive comprising of the Chairman, Deputy Chairman and Secretary/Treasurer. The Board can comprise of up to 13 members. It meets formally twice yearly. The Society holds a National Conference every 2 years.
